It was first given in 1901.The Nobel Prize is widely regarded as the single mostprestigious award given for intellectual achievementin the world. The Nobel Prize was established from afund bequeathed for that purpose by the Swedishinventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel in his willdrafted in 1895 for the award of five prizes annuallyin the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology orMedicine, Literature and Peace. A sixth forEconomics was added in 1968.Part of the Nobel Prize's prestige stems fromthe serious research that goes into the selection of theprizewinners. Prizes may be given only toindividuals, except for the Peace Prize, which may begiven to an institution. Each Nobel Prize consists of agold medal, a diploma bearing a citation, and a sumof money, the amount of which depends on theincome of the Nobel Foundation. A sum of$1,120,000 accompanied each prize in 1996. A NobelPrize is given entirely to one person, divided equallybetween two persons, or shared by three persons.Table-1 shows the previous winners, in the last fiveyears, of Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine.References
